How long into the year can we continue to call it 'the New Year'?

"I'll do that in the New Year", you might say.
To me it implies it's something that will be done sooner rather than later. Or does it mean it can happen any time within the year?
If you agree, then when would be a suitable cutoff date? End of January? End of March?

By the time yuo fill in the right year on forms the newyear is this year and wishing 'happy newyear' is a bit odd. "

To me it implies it will be done once the hustle & bustle of the festive season is out of the way, but by the end of January. Otherwise I would expect "I'll do that next year".

lunar new year is in early Feb so you can at least stretch it that far (early this year, sometimes later)

Just so long as one establishes begining and ending dates and reserves the term 'next' for the year following.
