I recently saw something on TV which said that early in the 20th century bigamy was very common in England, especially among the "lower" classes, due to the cost of procuring a legal divorce. It was simpler to just "dissolve" the marriage and move on. Interestingly it was usually the man who moved away and the programme said that there were numerous convictions of bigamists. I think they said that thre were more tham 100 in one year.

smiley - shrug
