They are not to clever for their own good or yours Garmin simply work but you must disable the unmade roads option unless you like off roading.

If you do choose Garmin, be sure to check for lifetime maps. Sometimes they're included in purchase, otherwise you'll have to purchase them separately. At least now it's a one time purchase unlike a few years ago when it would cost around $100 for each new map update.
This is still what makes dedicated GPS devices marketable as even though every smart phone can do the same thing, they rely on being connected. Having a whole continent of maps permanently d/led to your device is much more reliable.
One thing I would like to see as SatNavs become more connected is a precipitation radar overlay on the map screen. It's a very handy thing to have, along with traffic info, when on a motorcycle.

There's only one thing out of place - must I really, Really, disable the unmade roads option? That would make things ever so awkward here...

Well it dose make a difference in the UK continue off road is a problem farmers and the National Trust block the green roads to keep the 4 by 4 chaps out....
