In Southern Europe and Latin America, that is the "your wife is sleeping with another man" sign, particularly if swiveled.

I have heard that the V in Roman numerals actually derives from a handshape for 5. Namely, an open hand, thumb extended, palm in, with fingers and thumb both at approx. 60° from horizontal, the hand as a whole being in the vertical plane.
(This would be a lot simpler for me to write if Unicode included Sutton SignWriting, which it doesn't. Yet.)
