My favourite read from this year was:

The Mystery of the Egyptian Pharaoh at Niagara Falls A87813516

It's fun, with a breezy style, exactly the right length, and tells me a story I didn't know. smiley - biggrin (Richard III under the car park is a close second.)

smiley - applause You're right Dmitri, in fact I had the Pharaoh Entry as part of the original short list for the highlights. It was so hard to choose smiley - biggrin

Just looking at the list, another ocuple I recall/remember liking (and actually read back I assume when they went FP or were in PR), were cheese footballs, and bog butter, the former I still haven't managed to find smiley - droolsmiley - cheese and the latter I'd never heard of before smiley - weird and, well, its about butter. smiley - sillysmiley - winkeye oh, and the nunoo or however itse spelt, unfashionable fashion... err, which I cna't spell smiley - blush again not heard of it smiley - weird before smiley - zensmiley - biro

Thanks 2legs. Mentioning nocturnal hovering in the first sentence of Cheese Footballs was not unintentional smiley - smileyA87798866

I had a little mind warp then, imagining a dalek shaped hoover, hovering, with a suction hose instead of the fearsome sink plunger.

Yes, the Cheese Footballs. I should promote that one today purely for nostalgic reasons, thanks for the reminder. smiley - ok

I really enjoyed A87805588 Robert E Lee and His Pet Chicken - A Study in Southern Gentility with Freewayriding's excellent illustration. I also enjoyed the entry on the Conch Republic which is a quirky bit of American history that I had no idea had happened. I through Florida Sailor did a bang up job on that one.

Yes that would have been my second choice Its just that my first and just that bit better was The US Civil warentry .

So it is still the Confusing the Situation: Naming Conventions in the American Civil War A87805939 for me.

It's hard to decide on a favourite based on things like writing style, because there's some *seriously* good writers here. I could choose one based on usefulness, mostly the recipe ones (including the excellent Hop Flavoured Ice Cream smiley - winkeye) or perhaps chose one on how entertaining a read it is.

But, I'm choosing one that I believe reflects h2g2. An entry that chooses as its topic something that you won't find anywhere else, something that tackles the subject in a light hearted way, something that would provide guidance to any visiting aliens...

Controversial Postboxes of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games (A87773881)

At the time, and no doubt when nostalgia creeps around, or when a small child sees a non-red post box and asks "What's that about?", this entry provides everything you need to know, in one place, that you won't be able to easily get anywhere else.

I like it smiley - biggrin
