Should Women do Car Maintenance?

Post 1

Sho - employed again!

Because it's so, like, dirty and all. And those tools are too big and heavy for my girly little hands.

So should we leave it to the men while the ladies waft around the house waving a duster at IKEA's best?

(I was sure I'd already posted this - maybe it's been deleted? in which case sorry)

Why not if they want to do..Learning to change a tyre is far better than standing around waiting for a man to turn up and do it and it's not that difficult to change oil filters or replace plugs or recharge a battery.

Why not go the whole hog and become a car mechanic? It's a profitable occupation from what I've observed.smiley - winkeye

Dea.. - call me Mrs B!

Nope - if the big boys find housework too fiddly for their big, manly hands then let them sort the car out, empty the dustbin, kill the bugs and do all the other jobs that I CAN do but prefer not to.

Knowing that I can do if ever required is enough for me - I even managed to 'let' DDD do my tax return this year - it's not difficult, just time-consuming and I had better things to do. smiley - biggrin

Actually... I've got a picture in my head, of a female, blonde, or maybe very light brown hair, slightly whispy at the front, wearing a blue boiler suit, who's a car mechanic.... This I think is an actual picture, a photo... I can't quite recall where I saw it... it would have been betwen about 1989 and no later than 1993... smiley - erm maybe on a calender; the sort of calender that 'brands' would make, to advertise their stuff, so maybe a big brand of car oil, or something... Possibly up on the wall at a friend's Father's, (he was a car mechanic himself).. smiley - weird Or, it may have been when I used to hang out with the guys' who did testing on scale models of Lotus F1 cars (knew someone who worked there)..
*thinks*
smiley - weird
Mind.... still not as good as a woman in a fire-service emergency uniform... smiley - whistle blimey... I'll be turning myself hetro if I don't stop soon smiley - whistlesmiley - runsmiley - laughsmiley - snorksmiley - runsmiley - whistlesmiley - handcuffssmiley - pony

I can dust... scrub (proper scrubbing brush is the only way to really get a hard floor clean), bathroom tile cleaning, cleaning the toilet, basin, oven cleaning, I can sweep and hoover and mop too smiley - zen hmmm...
*thinks*
I've swept upstairs today, swept the bottom staircase and front hallway, swept the kitchen maybe five times, plus swept the utility troom several times, cleaned up all the gunk under the old washing machine, dusted utility room, then re-cleane the utility room again, after the new washign machine arrived, I've washed up twice (second time mainly my lodgers stuff), l cleaned the kitchen worktops three times, hoovered the front room and landing carpet, cleaned round the bath and tiles after showering, and cleaned the basin so it was clean enough after lodger had used it, for me to shave smiley - blush no real cleaning today though smiley - zen Oh, and emptied the bins... smiley - zen

Mol - on the new tablet

Neither of us do it in our house. We employ gentleman mechanics to do it for us.

I did once change the rear bumper on a ford fiesta though.

Oh yes, indeedy - we live in a sub-tropical zone, there is daily disposal of cockroach, wolf spider http://www.whatsthatbug.com/2010/10/30/wolf-spider-from-cyprus/ and all round general ant killing to be done. I quite like the many preying manti(ses?), dragonflies, grasshoppers, mini spiders and cicadas and love the geckos that run up and down the interior walls of the house eating mozzies all day!

10 years ago I would have screamed at the sight of any of them - I'm now pretty adept at cockroach bashing and spider removal but obviously prefer not to - that's what big boys are for!

Isn't a fair, gender-unbiased solution to all these problems (car needing washed, dust on the carpet, CDs in wrong order, weeds in the flower beds, whatever it may be) - if you're the one it's bothering, then you're the one who should rectify it?

Mind, I'm always supprised thesedays, how few men i know, who do drive, but really don't have the first clue about cars, even the most basic stuff, and they're straight off to a mechanic to do it for them smiley - weirdsmiley - alienfrown

Well, cars have changed a lot in the last decade or two. There's a lot of high-tech computer stuff in them, which needs to be diagnosed by complicated computers.

And that's why I do pretty much everything around here. smiley - winkeye

I put myself through school by working as first a service advisor and then a tech at a car dealership. Worked there for a couple years after school, too. I still hate getting my hands dirty, but there are now Official Funny Stories for the family about the times I changed the battery in a blizzard while my OH held the flashlight, etc. But seriously. Why on earth should either of us waste what little free time we have on car maintenance, when we can pay someone else to do it while we do enjoyable things? (I see a parallel thread about housekeeping... we used to pay a cleaner, but I spent so much time going behind her fixing everything that wasn't right, it's less time and effort to just do it myself in the first place, even now that we've moved to a much bigger home.)
