I just opened this for the first time in *ages* and was surprised to see how far down the list I appear - do we really have that many returnees?

No, it's a very long existing bug. This started ages ago, maybe around the time the BBC introduced Barlesque, the 'Who's Online' has been broken for at least a year. It shows up everyone who's page has been opened recently, Entries which have been read etc.
The BBC techies tried to fix it, but failed. Our technical team have tried to fix it, but it is impossible at the moment due to the way the site is constructed ( don't ask me to explain as that stuff is well over my head)
Sorry for the inconvenience, but it really is something the Tech team are aware of and wish to sort out as soon as it is possible to do so.

I do hope that if it doesn't get fixed that it doesn't get disabled (eg buttons removed). As far as legacy bugs go, it's a good one.

I'm starting to get into it as it is. It's creative.

I have been known to click the name above and below me, have a little look round wherever it takes me
I hope to bump into my 'U number neighbours'
I know that I could search for them but that would spoil the fun
so easily entertained...

Unlikely for me: the one below me hasn't posted since 2009, and the one above hasn't posted since 2004!
