Not so much compensation as punitive fines. As I understand it, if NewsCorp are found to have breached strict US ethics rules, they can be fined up to one third of the company's worth. That would be billions.

I wouldn't trust Murdoch to deliver my papers, let alone run Sky Broadcasting. How can he claim to be ignorant of the phone-hacking scandal yet believe himself to be fit and proper to take over Sky?
Yes, the potential compensation payout could effectively wipe him out. That would be a fitting end to this debacle.
