sorry footie again: what's the official result of a match after a penalty shoot-out

Post 1

My colleagues are very keen that we all have a bet on the England-Germany match on Sunday.

So everyone will pay EUR 1 and forecast a score. But, of course, given the history of the teams, we need to take a penalty-shoot-out into account.

So, say the match itself is drawn after extra time (say, 1-1) and the penalties come into play. Germany score all 5 and England score 4. (I'm a realist... sort of)

What is the final score? 6-5?

if anyone has a link to an official FIFA site showing the info I'd be pathetically grateful.

And if England lose I'm not going to work on Monday.

I believe it would be:

1 - 1 AET
Germany win 5-4 on penalties

All bookies will pay out on the score after full time (90 minutes + additional). I suggest you do the same.

we're just putting all the money in a pot and the one(s) who get the right score get it (or share it)

so we need to fix a rule and I wondered if there was one for this type of thing.

I'm deffo not running a book - I don't do maths for starters...

officially the penalties in a shoot-out are just deciders, they do not count in the overall score of the game...

so if they don't count - England haven't lost quite so many times...

we've decided to count all penalties.

I'm sure there won't be any this time.

Oh no, see, the result counts, the number of goals doesn't except as a curio...

We did a sweepstake in the last euros for the total number of goals... Without penalties. this year there was talk of doing it *with* penalties, which would have been a nightmare cos nobody really keeps those stats around!

well we have to have a way to decide who gets the money and we decided number of goals. or everyone will forecast 1:1 and everyone will just get their stake back...

total including penalties adds an extra dimension of doubt smiley - winkeye

I reckon a 2-1 win.

Not sure who to though!

Ooh, I know where I got it from!!!

Random thought when I woke up in the early hours.

Rooney breaks his bad spell with a wonderful goal in the first half.

Gets marked so much he cant really partake any more.

An own goal is scored after a series of fumbled defensive moves from the midfield back.

Rooney is so downhearted after being let down by his own team and his goal form turning to nothing that he walks off the pitch crying and has to be subbed.

In the end we concede another perfectly reasonable goal, England go home early and Ronney's spiit is broken and he never plays internationally again. (But is fine for Man U).

I promise, I'm not being harsh, it just struck me that it COULD happen!

What you could do is-

Get your 'punters' to predict the full time score, the score at the end of extra time, and then results of a penalty shoot-out. That way you have all the bases covered.

Apparently, out of the last 27 England-Germany matches, there are twelve wins apiece for each side, and 3 draws.

Still think you'll be having Monday off smiley - winkeye
