I usually use the built in reader in Safari, but periodically it goes haywire (today I have 3000 items showing as unread when it should be only maybe 50). It will take some time to sort that out so I'm looking for a reader that does similar to the Safari one:
1. it shows me obviously when a new item is in the reader
2. it has either the whole text (or partial) in plain text, rather than just a headline (which is what Firefox does). I want to be able to read the update in the reader.
3. It's easy to load.
Any recommendations?

I use Google Reader, but I don't know if it "obviously" shows new items. I don't have any confusion over what's new, and can set it to only show the unread items, when reading. I've been using it for a couple of years and I'm happy. As always, YMMV.

Oh, and can you read in the reader without having to open a new window?

I use Google Reader too after having used Bloglines previously. I'm very happy with Google Reader. It will alert you to any new pages and it will show the full text if that is how the author of the blog or web-page configured their own RSS reader to work.

YMMV = your mileage may vary

Yes, you can, if the blogger or news source has set it up that way. I can read all most all my subscribed blogs, photos and all, although some folks want you to go to their blogs, so you'll see the last sentence followed by "..." as a link, when they do that.

I'm trialing a stand alone reader - Netnewswire (mac only?). Stupid name, but quite lovely to use so far.
I find google products a bit clunky, probably because they're designed for high speed internet, but we have middling speeds here.
