Good beer, staff, food, log fires,no 'fruit machine', etc

Any suggestions, .particularly in the Staffs or Preston area.

I think there may be some interesting Canalside pubs as well in Staffordshire worth a look at.

Can you deal with living or staying in a 57' long floating cupboard?

I've never been to Staffordshire or Preston, so I've no pub ideas, I'm afraid. If you're ever in Oxford, Birmingham or Shrewsbury give me a shout though. smiley - biggrin

Most of them, to be fair. My favourites are:

Admiral Benbow
The Three Fishes (just goergeous. Only got a seat once though)
The Whestsheaf (not bad, has live folk sometimes)
The Loggerheads (sterling stuff, still has several different rooms and two entrances)
The Coach and Horses (good beer and a little out of the way)
The Old Post Office (but can have overbearingly loud music at weekends and the food can be hit-and-miss)
The Boathouse (a little out of town but looks over the river - beer was good but not the last time I visited)
The Shrewsbury Hotel (may be a Wetherspoons but ain't bad)
The Salopian (doesn't deserve Shrewsbury pub of the year in my opinion but it's not a bad place - quite small though)

I think that's it. These are all within the town centre. There are a few more if you're prepared to walk out a little way.

Could try the Anglesey for a quiet drink; they have got a jukebox but the landlord turns it off or down so low you can't hear it.

Or The Lord Burton in the town centre, very busy but cheap beer. I don't go pubbing much now but there is one attached to the Burton Bridge Brewery, and it is haunted by a good lookin woman in jeans with a cannon ball.

Depends how far you can travel. Take a look here - http://www.brunningandprice.co.uk/ . Every one of their pubs that I have been to has been good - well kept beer and good food and atmosphere.

Well, yes indeed, 'nice one' Turvy! I fully roadtested Sutton Hall at lunchtime today with a good friend. It passed with flying colours.

The sticky redcabbage provoked particular comment.smiley - smiley

The 'Acorn' ale was spendid too!

Thanks smiley - ale

Hi Maximus

Glad you enjoyed your lunch.

We have road-tested a few of their pubs and the food, ale, atmosphere and prices are consistently good to exceptional. We live in North Wales and our nearest two are the Glasfryn in Mold and the Pen y Bryn in Colwyn Bay.

Did I understand that you are on a canal boat of some sort? If you are then there is another of their pubs in Llangollen, the Corn Mill which we enjoyed. Great views of the River Dee. The Grosvenor is also close enough for a lunchtime treat for us.

We discovered Brunning and Price through trying to find a nice pub for a family get-together. Most of my family and in the Midlands. We were all really impressed (as a family of trenchers and gastronaughts)!
