A bit early?
Is mise Duncan Posted Aug 18, 2000
No - I was drinking yesterday..last night even. Sports and social club pub quiz - didn't win, but drinks were free.
Even though I checked the spelling about 3 times on that last post, I still got "experimental" wrong. I think today I will be a net producer of bugs

Have your eyes tested anyway.
Perhaps it was _lack_ of alcohol?
And good luck!

I didn't check your last posting before I posted my last posting (if you see what I mean. If not, lay off the Guinness.) And of course too much of the stuff won't help. Ever heard of hangovers? You should have drunk a pint or two (or three) of water before turning in last night. That would have helped.

Actually I'm surprisingly good this morning because I did drink a pint of water before going to bed and also had a hot whisky after the Guinnesses which also helps.
What I don't understand is why the company pays for these nights out and doesn't have them on Friday nights.

Yes, WS, sorry. About the mothering, I mean. My son registered on H2G2 yesterday. I don't know his pseudonym, but it'll be fun finding out. So I can leave yours alone. And Cheerful Dragon is also a contender I think. For cybermum.
Off the tracks...

Just as eskimos are supposed to have a number of words for snow, so the Dublinners have a number of phrases meaning "to be drunk":
"Stocious" - drunk
"Twisted" - quite drunk
"Polluted" - Very drunk
"Like a rubber monkey" - Falling down drunk
I'm sure there are more, but I can't keep up

I don't have any kids of my own and Duncan sounds a bit old to qualify to be my son. (I might have kids if I could skip the noisy / messy / disobedient stages, and go straight to interesting and useful.) However, I do remember the advice my mum used (and still does) come up with, usually after the event. And I can also remember the one and only time I got thoroughly drunk. (I didn't enjoy the experience of not being in control of myself, i.e., I couldn't walk unaided. I also didn't enjoy being sick, but at least my sister and my brother-in-law made me drink plenty of water before I went to sleep.)
Oh, and Duncan, a hot whisky before you turn in will probably undo the benefit of the pint of water. Next time, just drink the water and forget the hot whisky.
