The BBC have conducted a poll into what might be deemed religiosity in different aspects on society from the current Religious Hatred legislation wokring its way through The Commons to to prominance of women and gays within the office of religion. I thought the results were interesting to say the least (particularly the results of the second poll smiley - yikes) I wondered what the reaction of The Forum would be to the questions asked in the poll? Do you find the results susprising or encouraging?

Any and all opinions are invited.

I thought the second question was incredibly badly worded.

"Our laws should respect and be influenced by UK religious values"

Respecting something and being influenced by something are two (potentially) very different things.

I personally would be unable to answer that question since I think the laws should respect the values, but they should not be influenced by them.

Fair point.

Addressing the second poitn about incorporating religious values into the law. I remember in my Law A-level discussing I think it was Dworkin and Devlin about whether the law should be moralistic. It is a difficult area and unusal topic since there are plenty of thing leglislated against which are neither moral nor immoral just as equally there moral and immoral acts which are not covered by legislation.

The argument was always about I recall *whoose* morals do you incorporate into the law and then how the law is supposed to adapt to changing mores and standards in society.

oh bother. I've just realised I've posted this in Ask and not at The Forum.

I'll re-start the thread there and post a link to it from here.

I would find that more encouraging than not. The number of people supporting free speech, gay and female religous peeps were good to see - the way I pick it from the media is that there is a large backing for the religous hatred law with almost no dissent, which this shows is not really that true.

It is similar with the various stories about gay and female clergy - they seem to show that there is a massive amount of people not happy with any of it, but again it is fairly even for and against.

There is work, gotta dash smiley - sadface Until later...
