Oh definitely only consult when there's no other option. But there's no way I'd've had the patience to put Titania together without it.

Maybe I'm too quick to give up. smiley - smiley

The hints on the Hitchhiker's were good. Hints, but in no way a walkthrough.

The second set of graphics on the BBC were drawn by ex-Researcher Andrew Wyld. smiley - loveblush

I did finish all of Starship Titanic without cheating. I don't think I even consulted the in-game hints. It was tough, ... no wait. I did... ONCE, right near the end. I think it might have had something to do with that chicken... maybe not.

Is there an easy way to get my DOS versions of the text adventure games running on a PC?: I should have a couple of CD-ROMs somewhere that contained over 50 differnt text adventures, plannet fall, stationfall, hitchhikers, leather godesses of fobos, zork i II III, adventure, enchanter, sorcerer, spellcross, seabrook,... blimey can't remember then... though it is a good decade since I played them all... smiley - bigeyes heck if I'd not have had infocom text adventures I'd have finished my Masters thesis on time smiley - dohsmiley - run

What *is* that walkthrough you all keep talking about? We just played the game. Took us ages, but then we weren't in any hurry.

To play the text game on windows do the following

Download the emulator from here and unzip it. And click x64
http://www.zimmers.net/anonftp/pub/cbm/crossplatform/emulators/VICE/WinVICE-2.1.zip

Click the download link for the hitchhiker's game here
http://www.c64.com/?type=1&id=516

Start the emulator, click file, click autostart disk

it's a little slow but it works.

It's so easy to play the hitch hiker's game on here... why bother with an emulator?? (unless you're limited in your internet access of course!)

It even saves your game!

I'm very smiley - cross that I lost my boot legged/emulator version of Bureaucracy. I had D/Led that to my first PC... (it was a 90MHz Pentium with the floating point decimal bug... wow, that's been a while). If you're not familiar with Bureaucracy that was Douglas Adams other Infocom game. There's no online version and I can't even find an emulator version of it today.

[edit]... there WASN'T any versions the last time I checked but apparently there are today. I'm at work so I can't confirm. I wish there was an approved version linked here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/hitchhikers/game.shtml

BTW... if you want to get the full 1980's effect (no graphics but also NO SAVE) for the Hitchhiker's game, the original is here: http://www.douglasadams.com/creations/infocomjava.html

I had Bureaucracy on my CD ROMs of infocome games! smiley - biggrinsmiley - erm
If I remember correctly they were either .z5 or .z3 file extentions so I don't know if they'd be any use now if I went and dug the discs out smiley - evilgrin

I'm not fond of the one on the BBC site of the H2G2 game; its got pictures and uses flash smiley - yikessmiley - doh think I'll have to investigate that link above to play the text games though smiley - run

There are free versions of the Zork trilogy over here ... http://www.infocom-if.org/downloads/downloads.html

I used to love what were called "Text Adventures" and are now termed Interactive Fiction. Never enjoyed the upgrades to "Graphic Adventures" because they were rarely up too much, and imagination is a powerful thing. In the days of BBC Mico B I used to enjoy the Level 9, Acornsoft and Scott Adams games.

I recall there was also another HHGTTG text adventure available on there. It may be the one referred to on this page about legal action against Supersoft ... http://www.zxsoftware.co.uk/8bitgamer/?cat=20

I couldn't believe it. And I simultaneously didn't want to believe it. I'd been playing that game, on and off, for about six years. And now it was over. smiley - wah

I should try again. I might remember the opening twenty screens verbatum, but I can't rememeber the end at all (and I'll have only forgotten the toothbrush or something silly anyway).

I have decided that I am officially rubbish at text games.

I had trouble getting onto the vogon ship, let alone getting my hands on that bleedin babel fish.

That's not because you're rubbish, it's because the game is incredibly hard. smiley - hug
