Correct
Yes you're right you are correct in your definition.
Now if Id used any of the above "your" words above in the wrong way or place you still would have got my meaning correctly, which in my opinion is the PARAMOUNT purpose of language.
I dont know what a past participle is or care what a preposition does. Im quite happily ignorant of such things. I dont care if mtorists understand how oxygen allows the ignition hydrocarbon fuels the or know if they know how to fix a dodgy solenoid.
As long as they indicate correctly and dont run me over Im happy.
I feel the same way about language, its their for a job its cute when it sounds pretty and sometimes whom or even axe can be qaint but mostly its a pain when people try to make things different just for the sake of being different especially when they know other people will get what they are saying.
one love

Language has DE-volved, I wish carole vordaman would bring back vowels, I'm tired of 'ppl tht spk lk ths' - we can all pretty much understand what it says, but the laziness of it all is just annoying. Language shows a lot about a country, I think Britain has declined so much culturally since the 'txt spk' "revolution".

RE: Butter.
I think people have been confusing the soft 'ahh' (as in 'bArn') which I meant in my post with the harsh 'ah' (as in 'bAtch') which as Blicky correctly pointed out has been the common replacement for 'er' for years.

"Oh come off it, SoRB, who the heckity EVER says in casual conversation - 'To whom did you give it?'"
I thought I'd made that clear - I do. Not all the time, but I do, specifically when I'm in Spock mode. Which is most of the time that I'm at work, and some of the time I'm at home.
"Get outta here."
OK.

Hmmm, it seems I erred in assuming friends would understand when I was being playful and making a bit of fun (yes, I'm talking to you, blicky and SoRB) without having to stick smileys all over the place.
For example - "Get outta here" - meaning: Yeah right. Not *literally* that I wanted anyone to leave this thread.

Has anyone noticed the word Gay becoming a synonym for homosexualist and so for that matter has queer. Dyke has been given that meaning too and queen, fag, faggot, cheese, weasle, chair, temporary, straight, washing machine, cardboard and testube all now mean gay. I predict that within the fornight all words in the world will mean homosexualist.
I'll get me coat, that just means Im going but soon it'll mena Im out of the closset you just watch.

I would ike to point out at this juncture (somewhat belatedly as this thread shifted way down the list) that I am a homosexualist and, erm, a pedant.
Ah.
I'll get my own coat.

The use of the double adjective/adverb has increased over the past few years. Maybe the Spice Girls are to blame: "Tell me what you really really want".
"He's a big big fella"
"You're an utter utter idiot"
