Don't get me wrong... I'd love the games to go to London...

Simply because the ruddy Frenchies around here have quite enough national pride as it is and they'll be totally insufferable if they win smiley - winkeye

If we do win, at least one of the events will be in my home town.

The local country park has been put forward for the cross country style cycling stuff. smiley - ok

As London is already one of the most expensive and crowded places to live in the country it makes me a bit cross when people that don't live there and therefore aren't going to have yet another big hike in local taxes or increased local congestion get snippy about the people that *do* live there objecting.

As Mina pointed out, there is likely to be a certain level of disruption. While that is fine for the people who are able to take time off to enjoy a festival of sport it is going to be bloody annoying for people that can't or don't want to.

Having said all that, I would like London to win (I don't live in london any more smiley - winkeye). I remember being in Nottingham in 1996 - one of the cities hosting Euro '96. It was overcroweded in town but the atmosphere was great and everyone got sucked into enjoying it.

Surely IF the infrastructure is improved, and the facilities built will be available AFTER the Olympics then it is a good thing. It's not like Londoners won't be getting something out of it.

I would also point out that there are other cities in the UK that would jump at the chance.smiley - winkeye

I'm not really here

I read about the offer of my town for one of the events this morning on the way to work. So great, not only havoc at work, but home too. Fecking marvellous. Great for people who aren't affected of course, and I don't begrudge the olympics coming here, but why put it in the most crowded city we've got, and then string out the games over a busy commuter route?

'I.e.: We've p***ed off so many countries around the world through our foreign policies that they'll vote for the French out of spite.'

I very much doubt this. If you think *we've* p***ed off a lot of people in the past, then you should see how many the French have upset. I don't mean this as a dig against the French, (I have French ancestry and a French surname IRL,) but even the countries who are friends with the French don't like them. The country is beautiful and the citizens wonderful, but their politicians and negotiating tactics are appalling.

But then I am British, so I suppose having a dig at our nearest continental cousins is something of a national sport.

I think London will pip Paris at the post or even win by a large margin

Our bid is excellent and so is our city.

Also because I can't find the Dr. who thread

I'll put it here.

The last time I was in Edinburgh they still had blue police boxes

Are they stiol there

if so

It a shame they didn't make use of that in Dr who.

Primeval Mudd (formerly Roymondo)

I think that while London should win, it'll probably go to Paris.

Still think that it's a shame that it takes an Olympic bid to generate the investment necessary to rejuvenate a lot of areas (especially Stratford) and the London transport system. But I must point out that I don't think the London transport system is that bad - it's just over subscribed. Not much can be done about that in the short term.
