So how do you get one of those long names like:- 'Miranda, Princes of the superstrata, ace pogo player, right side up' - that so many of h2g2 'researchers' have?

you can add pretty much what you like to your name by clicking 'preferences'.some things,like muse of for instance you get by joining a group.

You do have to stick to the House Rules though - if you don't you'll find your name is reset to a number, and you'll have to go into preferences again and choose a nice one.

You'll be able to enter more characters than a name can actually contain, so check immediately afterwards to make sure your new name hasn't had its end unceremoniously lopped off.

But having got this longer name, do you have to remember it and type it all in each time you 'Sign In'?

nooooo....your sign in name is different from the name that appears on screen.

The name you use to sign in doesn't change; it's not the same as the one that gets displayed on any content you create (although of course you can make your displayed name identical to your login name).
