I am mentioning this link in Science Matters from The Post, I hope there will be a lively debate here by the time it comes out Thursday.

Even at home or on holiday 62% of people check their work messages, do we benefit from not switching off, does it make us more efficient, ready to react and on the ball, or do we need compulsory ‘rest’ periods?

Woah.... I'm pretty infomanic!!!... I know I feel better when I can't get to my email for half a day or so... smiley - winkeye

It drove me crazy to be without my computer at home for a couple of months, but I think it the long run it may have actually been ::gulp!!!:: a good thing!!!

Once you get used to being without it, you can start to really relax I think!

It is very difficult to resist the urge!

It helps to be in a room without a computer.

I'm not really here

I've actually stopped going on holiday because I'm so bloody miserable that I can't get online.

Spaceechik, Typomancer

I've been taking "mini-breaks" lately, where I just don't log on for 2-3 days. Now, I have to log on, for the job hunt.

Thanks for the tip, Croz, I was wondering why F5 seemed to have given up the ghost... smiley - laugh

I come online mainly from work now, if it's slow enough in the shop for me to do so. I don't get online from home much at all anymore, unless I'm responding to classified ads or expecting to hear from someone.

Internet access, and h2g2 especially, kept me from getting seriously stir crazy when I was laid off in 2002. I sometimes miss being able to spend hours online chatting with friends via IM. And it's frustrating to no end that it's taking me WEEKS to complete a new entry for the guide I'm working on.

But I've never skipped a vacation because I'd miss getting online! That's hard core!

As someone who is home alone most of the time.and can't get out and about, i would be lost without H2G2,and my e-mails.
I must admit i do give it a little thought when away on holiday, but it's my friends that i miss!!
I really enjoy my e-mails!

Yeah, I miss my friends when I haven't heard from them for a while, either. And even though I don't have the time I wish I did to enjoy and respond to them, I do love getting emails! smiley - smiley

I get obsessed with email and other online stuff when I'm working. But when I'm home all the time, I find it less compelling. I'm desperate for distraction when I'm working.

abbi normal "Putting on the Ritz" with Dr Frankenstein

Having done without my computer a few times I became less engrossed in it. I was really enamoured at first, sort of like a new religion.

***********

I really will never understand why a person would want to be gotten a hold of at all times and in so many ways. Just the phone is an irritation at times! Especially when it is used for other peoples business ( cold calls - sales - charity- surveys)more than my own business and pleasure.

I value the varied contact the computer can give and would rather not do without. It is a valuable inlet and outlet. Seems it could and does keep people from fully living in the moment in other ways. Depends on the uniquely staisfying balance for the individual I suppose.I have made some friends on the computer and that is a plussmiley - biggrin

I still cherish quiet uninterrupted moments in nature or with friends in person (taking no calls)more most days.

To start with email/internet was meant to be a tool, but it seems to be essential to life now! Perhaps because we don't find the time to write letters, so email is a good alternative.

Mina that is worrying though, at the least get a portable thingy and go anyway! Or think of the fun when you get back to hundeds and hundreds of emails.smiley - laugh

I'm not really here

This year I am intending to spend my holidays visiting h2g2 Researchers around the UK with the vague idea that they'll let me at least pop onto h2g2 for ten minutes or so. smiley - biggrin I might pop into York for a few days, but I should be able to cope with a couple of days offline.
