So, if I've set up an area of of the guide that people can hold discusions in, and I want to attract some activity, is there a particular place I should go to to announce it?

Well you don't appear to be attracting much attention here.

Visit the busiest forums and mention it. The people there will tell others if they like it.
Also you can go and tell Peta, U24 she may add it to the front page.

Or you can change your researcher name to something ludicrous and self-publicising - which will draw attention to your home page in the users online box - cheap but effective?

I've got a bit of experience with this sort of thing, as I manage my own club and have done my own version of a "Call For Entries."
1) Notify Peta on her World of H2G2 thingie.
2) Write an article on it and submit it to the Post.
3) Let people know about it in forums... but don't spam, as this is incredibly rude. Just mention it in passing in conversations with people who would be likely to join into that sort of thing.
4) If this thing is a social club, write up an advertisement for it and submit it to the Overwhelmingly Huge Guide to H2G2 Clubs, managed by myself: http://www.h2g2.com/A270325
5) A good tip that many people use, but not one I've done myself, is to add a parenthetical remark about your venture to the end of your nickname. For instance, Demon Drawer up there is using his nickname to announce to everyone that he is running for virtual prez.
Hope this helps. Good luck!

I am implying that there is a quick and cheap method of publicising your pages, if you don't mind whoring your personality to the god of advertising

Oops, sorry, for one moment there I thought we lived in a culture that responded 'spiritually' to nought but materialistic desires, and worshipped at billboards rather than altars.

Apart from the rant -
1. Putting clear obvious links on your own home page;
2. Finding like-minded groups/forums and getting involved.
3. Submitting articles for approval - takes forever but results are worth it (apparently)

And do you find that a mention on the front page and good ranking in then search engine gets you plenty of visits?
Twice in a week? That's pretty good going.

I thought my name WAS pretty bleep-ing ludicrous!
Anyway, after reading the various pieces of advice you guys have thoughtfully provided, I have decided to act on a couple. Among them is the suggestion that I mention it casually in my conversations. Here, watch how casually I drop the hint...HEY! VISIT MY CIRCUS!! RIGHT NOW! AT http://www.h2g2.com/A382808!
Was that the kinda thing you guys meant?

Apologies for being dumb, but where you (frizzy chick) having a dig at DemonDrawer or some other inhabitant of the "Who's Online" list? I never really use the thing - so I guess I might be missing out on the really bad examples...

MRD it could very well have been a dig at me, But I don't mind and the current plug is mild. I have been far worse including page links.
