"It's grim up north" is the theme which shines through the deep layer of golden syrup smeared over the barrel-scraping plot.
It's about a brass band attached to a coal mine which is about to be closed leading to mass local unemployment in an area where nobody has any work anyway and they have to get up to go to work before they go to bed and some blonde totty turns up to do the pre-closure report and just happens to be a class brass player and joins the band (and sh*gs Ewan McGregor despite his intermittent northern accent failure) but the band leader is rushed to hospital and the band have to stop bickering and pull together and win the national competition against unlikely odds because this will make him well again because music is his one joy in the unremitting grimness of northern England where everybody always pulls together
I don't want to ruin the ending for you so I won't say any more.

Well, the closing credits are quite good. My favourite bit, in fact.

the film isn't cheesy at all, it is serious social commentary.
The music is superb, and played by REAL musicians from the Grimesthorpe Colliery Band.
It's got Ewan MacGregor and Tara whotsit in it, plus a bunch of faces that you will recognise.
All that AND the music is SUPERB.
don't listen to that eejot.

I know I'm not an eejot so I assumed the comment was meant for somebody else
And in all honesty Alec, it may well be a serious social commentary, but it's not very good at making the points it's trying to make because it overplays them. The Full Monty was far more effective (and also includes a bit of brass if memory serves).
Anyway, I think you've cracked it, Ford. Can't go wrong with a bag of nuts. Although having tried chestnuts roasting on an open fire this year I can report that they taste disgusting.

Brassed Off was little short of Trade Union propaganda. It did of course neglect to mention that the mining unions were bleeding the Government white for the preceding ten years.
As someone who has lived in the vicinity of Doncaster and Bridgend, I found the film in quite bad taste.

Ewan McGregor was lovely in it. Am not au fait with the politics or anything, and no idea about his accent, because I've only seen it dubbed in German. Still one of my favourites, though. Was rather weepy, though - three boxes of Kleenex sort of stuff
I found Full Monty a very sad film, despite the fact that it's supposed to be funny, but Robert Carlisle is always to be taken seriously, I reckon.
It's too late for Christmas present suggestions now, but you can get nifty saxophone-shaped CD-racks (which probably fall over once you put more than 3 CD's in them, but it's the thought that counts).
Failing that, depending upon how much you want to spend, a (insert suitable brass instrument here) key ring might be a nice idea.
