"NEW YORK - CBS News has fired the producer responsible for breaking into "CSI: NY" last week for a special report on Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat's death, a CBS executive said Monday, speaking on condition of anonymity.

The news report came during the last five minutes of the forensics mystery last Wednesday, prompting viewer complaints and leading CBS to repeat the show Friday." smiley - starsmiley - star

WE INTERRUPT this thread with a news bulletin. Someone has died. We'll go over to our international correspondent for more information. Bill, what can you tell us?

Well, Joe, news is just coming in that someone has died. We don't know who yet and if we did we couldn't tell you until the relatives have been informed.

Well, there you have it. Breaking news from around the World. Now back to the studio...

If the news is important then it is reasonable to interrupt a programme to publish it. Deciding just what is important is the job of the producer at the time. There will inevitably be complaints from people who would rather watch the end of CSI or were taping it while they were out but I don't see that that is grounds to sack the producer.

Yes, that does seem rather extreme. I was watching CSI:NY last Wednesday and the broadcast was not interrupted. I would have been upset if it was, but would not have wished the producer to be fired.

Did Arafat's death come as a shock to Americans? Enough to interrupt a show with a newsflash? I mean, we were kinda expecting it here in the UK, having had various reports over the previous week of his continuing deteriorating health.

I am glad that wouldn't happen here... It's bizarre!

I'm in America and, no, Arafat's death was not a shock. I was aware of his condition and knew he'd pass on soon. CBS thought it appropriate to interrupt the show. G.W. Bush thought it appropriate to send a mid-level official from the Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs to represent the United States at Arafat's funeral. Hmmm...
