Littluns brought home unwanted lodgers again .This time I refused to spend 10 pound on a can of insecticide mousse so spent 20 on a zapper comb. It doesn't work I used it this morning and it got nothing. I washed and wet combed her hair tonight and got loads of the little blighters out .
I've heard about the mayonaise treatment and will be using that tomorrow but wondered if anyone has got any other sucesfull treatments, and deterents, please

Tea-tree oil mixed with water and sprayed in the hair every day before school deters the little critters (head lice I mean - not kids)

slapping on lots of conditioner before you wet comb helps get shot of the nasty things too.

Bring back Nitty Nora the Nit Nurse to schools.

Shaving the kids heads works. No hair, no lice, simple!!!

If we were all bald they'd all be living in our 'private' areas.

I guess 'those' areas would have to be shaved too.
My littlun and me now have heads that smell of mayo but lovely soft hair,I've made a tea tree oil solution spray, so hopefully that will take the smell away in the morning, and I've changed all the bed linen and put her hat in the wash.
Blimey, I think I'd rather have mice, 'tho not on my head...

I just found this, which might be useful:

Make a half-half solution of apple cider vinegar and vegetable oil and massage it into the hair and scalp. Cover the head for an hour with a shower cap or plastic bag, then shampoo and comb hair thoroughly.

Recommended by a doctor, apparently. ACV is great stuff for lots of things so might be worth a try. Good luck!

Using a nit comb dipped in vinegar (on dry hair) was recommended by a doctor. Cheap and pretty deadly to lice. Rinse out of the hair afterwards.
The very best advice I ever received was from the school nurse, as follows.
Nit comb the wet hair every three days of ALL family members. Using conditioner helps to immobilise the lice but is by no means essential. Combing every three days ensures that you remove the lice which have subsequently hatched out from the adult lice you removed on previous combings. A tedious business, but it really, really works.
My family have been plagued by head lice for a long time. Ultimately, the only permanent solution is to get together with the school (or Scout/Guide leaders, youth groups, etc. etc.) to try to solve the source of the problem, namely the untreated children who are constantly passing lice on to your children. Unless you do that, you will be combing for ever more.

Find the family who don't bother to treat their kids ("as the lice'll only be back the next day") - and are therefore responsible for maintaining the viability of the entire school's lice population - and have their children taken into care. There is ALWAYS one family. Prolly the same ones that leave the vaccinations up to everybody else too.

Sorry, but my patience is wearing thin.

I find that using conditioner helps the combing process - especially if you are doing wriggly kids who say 'ouch' a lot otherwise.

I have told her teacher but unlike in previous years the 'the nits are back' sign didnt go up in the window. But then the parents of kids who have them and are unaware or just don't care probably couldn't read it anyway... I'm combing morning and evening, if I find any adult lice now I know shes picked them up that day, 'cause I know for sure we are all adult lice free. Then I guess it'll be time to visit the head mistress.

There is or was a rather nice Tea Tree and Mint shampoo and conditioner on the market that I used on my kids.That seemed to work until my daughter went to secondary school and that was the last time she got nits.The youngest being male and with very short hair never really had any problems.
