Irn Bru and some painkillers - the sugar, caffeine and vitamin C in the drink make you feel better immediately.

For the dehydration, an isotonic drink like Lucozade sport is better than just water.
Or then there's the Oliver Reed hangover cure: take the freshly-squeezed juice of one whiskey bottle...

The other type of cure is pre-emptive. Avoid nasty hangovers by limiting the amount of falling-down juice you imbibe.
Alternating alcoholic and soft drinks means you can still be pleasantly but detox yourself as you go along.
T - whose liver gets distinctly huffy after only two drinks these days

Yes - my liver went into a right old huff several years ago after we had a falling-out about the amount of detoxification I expected her to perform.

As to the salt bit: it helps your body to retain water even though it makes you feel thirsty.

Doesn't it absorb the water, making it harder for the body to assimilate? After all the point of thirst is to tell us we need more fluid, so generally anything that causes thirst would surely cause dehydration?

Dehydration isn't caused by a loss of water alone (usually); it is caused by a loss of electrolytes. This is water and salt and sugar. Rehydration is most effective then if the salt and sugar is put back at the same time. On the whole a teaspoon of sugar, a pinch of salt and a pint of water is about the right ratio. The crisps (or in your suggestion Marmite) supply the salt and sugar while water or fruit juice supplies the water. The advantage of eating something rather than taking the salt and sugar in solution is that it also calms the stomach.
I usually recommend crisps, lemonade and paracetamol.

Take it like a man! Have patience and it'll pass!
Come to think of it, I rarely get a headache as part of a hangover. General malaise, iffy stomach... Part of the reason I feel so bad, I think, is all the extra cigarettes I smoke when I'm drinking.
Worst headache ever was caused from 10 tins of Guinness and half a bottle of Cava. I shudder looking back...
