How many icons/things on your PC desktop?
2legs - Hey, babe, take a walk on the wild side... Started conversation Mar 9, 2008
Just wondering.
I seemed to have a lot (about 100 items nearly) so I've tidied it down to just hte 60 or so 'essential' folders links and icons for launcing applications and a couple of odd doc/files that are just there utnil they've found somewhere to go.
So how many 'items' are there on your computer's desktop/desktop equivelent (no idea if its even called that on a Mac or linux etc)

Three.
One of them's the recycle bin.
One folder for work stuff.
One folder for stuff.

Six on the main PC (Recycle Bin, uTorrent, Audacity, Blender, GIMP & Reaper).
This lappy has 58, mainly because downloads go to the desktop. Most of the icons are VSTs/VSTis and Reaper skins. Needs a bit of a tidy up!

I dislike clutter
Most apps are launched from a menu at the mouse cursor, invoked by middle mouse click anywhere on the desktop
Some apps are also available via custom key bindings
There's also a few on the panel, which resides at the bottom of the screen, and only becomes visible when the mouse cursor touches the lower edge of the screen.
I normally have 4 or 5 desktops, so when I have multiple applications open I can quickly and easily move from one to the other. I can slide any window on any desktop from to another desktop, or use the 'pager' to move or arrange windowed applications, and can switch desktops using the pager, or the mouse wheel, or hotkey combinations
Currently, KDE supports 20 desktops
Often I place icons for current documents, folders, or files on the desktop, for ease of access, but generally they end up in a specific folder somewhere when the current session ends.

I've got 15, but I have only had this machine a short while. My last pc had about 30.
This one will probably have more than that eventually because I hate the Vista start bar, too many clicks to get some of the programmes to start!

Your all going to make me go look and find out about this 'launchy' thing arn't you?
I'm seroiusly considering haveing a sort out of my desktop/documents folders and general untidyness of this PC which has stuff all over the place but I've not decided the best way to do it; I'm thinking a minimul amoutn of desktop stuff, maybe recycle bin, my computer, and shortcuts to a couple of C:/'folder' folders, maybe one for work and a couple oor audio stuff, and remove all the application shortcuts from the desktop as all the office and recording/music and web stuff can be launched from the menus but I cna't decide

Launchy is great! You do Alt + Space, it opens, then you type the first few letters of the name of the program you're after, hit return and the program opens.
Thanks Mu B, it's superb!

I have 2. Recycle Bin and Internet Explorer. I find everything else by the start button!
No point in having a gorgeous photo wallwaper and not being able to see it!

The beauty of Launchy is it means that I can do away with my Start menu as well.
I have this as my wallpaper:

8 - My computer, Recycle bin, Internet explorer and others I don't personally use.
The rest of the programme icons are in a menu bar.
I have more on my w*rk desktop but would find it confusing to have loads of document links on there

My PC desktop looks like this...

About 35 icons, none of which interfere with the pretty wallpaper (I took that photo when I was in Barcelona - it's the rooftop of Casa Batlló, designed by Gaudí).
Just makes things easier to find.

I've refused to have any kind of relationship with any* kind of wallpaper since spending three weeks removing multiple layers of wallpaper of varying levels of revoltingness from the spare bedroom walls and in particular the kitchen walls when I first moved into the house
In homage to those hours spent thus if I were to have a wallpaper on my desktop it would have to be a green* cushioned* brick-effect* wallpaper

I have a gorgeous close-up photo of The Treasury at Petra in the sunlight taken on our recent trip there as my wallpaper.
I'm considering the green, cushioned, brick effect look though, sounds nice
