h2g2 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Earth Edition

Hi folks. Here's the deal: I have the weirdest worst memory in the world! I remember a lot of details about a book I read in my younger days, around 15 or so years ago? Maybe earlier, but I'm going dippy trying to prove that such a book actually existed. So here's what I remember, PLEASE tell me you've heard of it and can give me a name and/or author!

The main character is a girl whose parents own a hotel. I even remember such daft details as the guest on the first floor with a piano, and the room floor isn't level.

Anyway, the hotel is opening an annex. The building isn't connected to the main hotel, and one of 'the girl's' jobs is helping prepare the annex, trekking back and forth... she carries towels across, helps paint the new rooms (cheery yellow), but somehow that stain won't come out of the floor, and the cupboard door just will not stay such.

Although there are ordinary posibilities for these things, there is something of a presence in the new annex room. All starts to get really weird when 'the girl' ends up in the local woods (?) and finds a white horse that whisks her off to the past... where she gets to observe the lives of the previous tenants of the new annex. There is tradegy, there is mystery - and that stain on the floor is soon shown to be blood...


So, PLEASE can someone finally tell me what I'm on about?!

I'm sure I heard of a website about a year ago that helped people with things like this, but i ...can't remember the name of it
