Don't really want to know if I'm reading that right in my head.

Yes, mascots aren't weird names in towns, but these also have weird names for the town as well, hence the connection. Only thing that could've been odd would've been a mattress for Sealy instead of Tigers.
Only one town I know of has the same name as the mascot - Matador High School Matadors.

Speaking of mascots, we have in Texas the Port Lavaca Fighting Sandcrabs. George Carlin thought this was amusing, "The Crabs are all over the Cowboys today ..."

My favorite is the Univ. of California Santa Cruz (UCSC) "Banana Slugs". "The FIGHTING Slugs", thank you. I even wear one of their visors ...

I actually have an answer to the "mascot in mianus" question, but I think I'd be for it.
Another odd town name (and town for that matter) is Texarkana, which is situated on the Texas/Arkansas boarder. I feel sorry for the townspeople there when they do taxes, as it has to be confusing to remember if you live in "Texarkana, Texas" or "Texarkana, Arkansas." Plus, Arkansas does pay state income taxes in addition to federal taxes, while Texas does not, so that also has to be a problem at times.
