Mutant goldfish

My dad has a pond in his back garden containing various types of pondlife and the odd goldfish. One of these goldfish is a black one which appears to have swelled up, creating the impression that it has swallowed a tennis ball. My dad says it's been there for months and would've died if there was something wrong with it. This is the weirdest thing I've seen all week, can anyone explain?

Perhaps it's pregnant? Or whatever the correct term would be when it concerns fish. They do swell up a bit whilst the eggs are getting ready to be spawned, I believe.
