0800 internet access
Hooloovoo Posted Apr 20, 2000
I'd love to signup with ntlworld, but I can't have cable - for resons which I won't bother going into here. I still think either 4unet or callnet is my best bet at the moment. X-stream is beginning to get on my nerves now.

You can have ntlworld on a BT line with the plug-in adaptor thingy and the £10 a month minimum spend on voice calls. (If you don't spend £10, you just get charged £10 anyway).

I know what you mean about trying to find the catch. I feel the same but can't find it. I keep having to check my connection to reassure myself I'm on an 0800 number. If I were on a BT line I'd still go for the NTL offer, and I don't work for them either.

X-streams official line is they have a 'Programme' to roll-out more lines in the next couple of months.
Phone up their Freephone Number, IGNORE the message that asks if u r a first time caller.
They WONT give u facts & figures but if u press hard enough they will confirm what I've said
I have actually succeded in connecting tonite for the 1st time.
I try them once then use my normal connection.
Looking at the other listing the NTL offer looks good

check out http://www.redhotant.com
yearly connection fee (£20 or so) and free inet all day long.
I've been quite impressed with them so far, despite my distrust in 24/7 free ISPs (as so far 2 of which have run off with money instead of giving me an account, good job I was paying on the behalf of others and never lost any of my own cash, muahahaha)

OK, here we go again.....
look at www.libertysurf.co.uk
They have recently formed (April) via a merger with X-Stream. They offer off-peak free net calls (like BT), with peak-rate at 1ppm, for 20 quid per year. It uses the same banner ads on the desktop as X-Stream. I had a few problems signing-up, but now its working it seems pretty quick, and I have yet to get an engaged tone. You can upgrade to 24/7 free access for an extra 35 quid.
Only works from a BT line. No dialler or anything needed, though you do dial a number (1436) to get onto the T3 phone network (i think), and then dial 175 to get the net connection. All other calls are still through standard BT.

I find X-Stream very difficult to goet on to, so I just get up at 2am and log on, and pray that I don't get disconnected. See my other message about 0800freedom.com for better a connection.

In my opinion there is only one free ISP worth trying (and no, I don't work for them). Having given up with X-Stream, I found www.0800freedom.com which is completely free - no call charges or ISP charges, OR monthly rates. Plus it's a decent connection, it's just that it takes them a while youto mail you telling you what software you need. Oh, and try not to tell too many people, I like my connection the way it is, Thanks

Thought I'd reanimate this old thread.
LibertySurf has completely packed up, its almost constantly engaged from the moment cheap-rate starts. The only way I can connect is to dial it sometime after midnight, and even then it takes upto 50 attempts. I'd advise anyone whos seen the recent adverts NOT TO JOIN.
Anyone any new suggestions for free ISP's that dont involve changing phone company???

Well, completely free is still a bit... er... useless. But if you're willing to pay a monthly fee (ten quid), BT Internet ain't a bad deal (free calls 18:00-00:00)...
And if you're willing to pay a fair bit to signup and about thirty quid a year, RedHotAnt do quite a good 24-7 free dialup deal. It's not massively reliable, but it's okay...
Currently I subscribe to both RedHotAnt and BT, they make quite a good combination...
