First encounters is availible here http://www.eliteclub.co.uk/download/
Also X-Wing Alliance is quite different to the earlier games, it starts out with you working for your families cargo company

For more modern takes on the open ended, do what you want, space malarky then Freelancer is good, and I have heard X2 is superb (I need a new machine before I can play it but soon I shall have my water cooled monster )
Of course for the best in Elite-alikes I would recommend Eve Online - http://www.eve-online.com - It is a massively-multi-player game. Though the view is third person, and the combat a lot more tactical than twitchy it is still the closest to Elite It is a huge universe populated with 1000's of people (over 10000 on at one time is the record at the mo'). It is also extremely open-ended, mostly friendly, has a decent turorial for the basics and decent players to help from there. It is also very, very purdy. WARNING : it is also pretty addicitve.
Hope this gives you some ideas Until later....

thanks for the advice, online gaming is no good for me however.
i rarely spend enough time near optic connections.
dont like using sat net, when i am in the middle of knowwhere as i could be located.
at least with a physical connection, you could just bury yourself in a naeigbours carrier.

Excuse me, I've suddenly lost in geek joy.

He thinks that Elite 4 should be out by the end of the year. But if he get hired he'll be working on another game.
Which is a shame, as I'd really like to see his name in the credits of an Elite game.
