What was the first h2g2 number and how were early numbers allocated?

I joined H2G2 in 1999 which is, as I've since found out, quite early in its existence. Were the early numbers started at 00001 or were they started at 01000 or higher?

I think the first 1000 were reserved for staff, or was it 10000. One or t'other and then they were handed out incrementally. Until later....

Well, actually the user numbers on H2G2 were all generated using a complicated algorithm based on 42 (of course).
This is why reasearchers can reverse this process and generate the number 42 from their user numbers.

I guessed that there would be some allocated to the system for one reason or another and I wondered where I was in the riffraff and whether the numbers, like rare number plates on cars, would one day have great value.
I like to plan these things so that I can have a comfortable retirement.

If you joined in 99 then how come your researcher number is higher than mine? I can;t remember when I joined but I'll be a bit surprised if it was that long ago!
As for valued numbers, well, those who have retained the old 5 figure numbers seem to inspire a certain amount of reverence amoungst those in the know

My original number is U45662 I then missed a few months changed my email address and some other things and when I came back in it had changed to BBC and the old stuff didn't work and I had to set up a new account

But one day I hope to find the way of getting back to my old account.

You should email h2g2 support - it was migrated to a Beeb account, so you should be able to migrate it to SSO.
