How do you remove an operating system from your computer?

Post 1

I recently installed Windows 2000 so I could mechanise a USB PCI card in my PC (yes I know, I'm well behind the times smiley - winkeye) but managed to install it without removing Windows 98. Now I'm not interested in keeping it so how do I now get rid of it?

Rid of windows 98? Are they on seperate harddisk partitions? Then again, if you are not that computer literate, the easiest way may be just to zap the whole lot and reinstall the OS you want. Until later....

Oh no, I'm not doing that. I had to update 2000 to Service pack 4 over a phone line and that was painful in the extreme. smiley - groan Not again, oh no!

They're on the same (and only) partition. I'm reasonably computer literate. I've dismantled and reassembled the thing on many occasions and have had all the pain involved in that.

I'm guessing I can't just chuck the Windows folder in the trash (whilst in 2000) and delete it as I suspect the two operating systems share files.

If it's too much of a pain I'll just uninstall everything from it (largely done anyway) and leave it there.

Cheers,

Orcus

If you did a full 2000 install then you can just delete the Windows folder (check that you have a winnt folder first), if you upgraded then I would not recommend it (but I am less sure of that as I never upgrade smiley - smiley). If you have a choice between the two operating systems at start up then you will need to edit the boot.ini file on C:. Hope this helps smiley - smiley Until later....

Why get rid of 98? I have win98 win2000 and Mandrake9.2 on the same machine and win98 is the only way to play some of my favourite games smiley - smiley

keep your old 98 as much harder for some viruses to break through if their is a copy of it at root earlier versions even better the ammount of disc space they take up is miniscule also handy for hideing files from prying eyes as system to old for them.

"If I do, I can always reinstall it."

Actually orcus, no you can't.

To have any win9x version on your drive, it has to be there first. Okay there is one way but it's long and involved and potentally rather expencive.

I would reccoment that if you have the drave space then keep it.

Never the less it's neither easy or reccomended. Unless you have an accurate calculator and a lot of nerve then it requires so aditional propriatry software.

When I first installed XP Pro on my PC, I had lots of trouble with my games.

I spent a bit of time on forums (technical ones) and reading up on XP.

Now all my games work on XP (old and new games) and it didn't take much to change settings.

A lot of my friends and work collegues say that 'a particular game' would not work on XP, so I went to their house and showed them how to set it up correctly.

In my experience, all games will work in XP, it just takes a bit of setting up.

Have a good one...

Sludge, as you've got games working in XP, perhaps you could give me a spot of advice- one of my favouriote games "sammy Sosa High HEat Baseball 2001" will not run- It installs, but when i try to run it I'm told it has "compatability issues"- what should I do?
