It is, according to English orthographic (spelling-pronunciation) rules.
Rule 97(f): Just because a word looks like a compound doesn't mean it is (ie it's not phone-tic).
138(c): -ic moves the stress to the penult; (d) this stressed vowel is short unless there is no intervening consonant (eg Aramaic).
245(g) supplemental: Open syllables reduce to schwa when pre-stressed.
