Old calendars printed ordinary days in black and saints' days in red. So a red letter day came to be a holiday or celebration or special in some other way

When I was a kid I went to a mixed religious school, but if a Catholic child's Saint's day i.e. the Saint they were named after, fell on a school day -they were given the day off. Truly a red letter day
