about 3 inches square they appear in pairs about 2 inches apart in our roads often near junctions (maybe a coincidence).
What are they/What are they for?

Lady in a tree, can I ask a question. Why do you post a book smiley to the thread? Is it to tell us that you are keeping an eye on the thread? When I am interested in a conversation I come across, I just subscribe to it, without posting.

In long threads that you don't visit regularly and that grow quickly (like Tell Us a Joke), it can be useful to mark the place you read up to. I don't do it myself, but I can understand people who do.

Ah I see. I think the new 'x new posts' link is supposed to do something similar, but it isn't working yet.

It works pretty well for me ... as long as you remember to refresh your MP page every time you visit it... - there seem to be a few snags with very long threads but I find it's a godsend.
I suspect the things you're on about are used as fixed points by the guys with the theodolites when they're out surveying the roads etc...

"guys with the theodolites"
I thought the theodolites were extinct now and had been for millenia?

Gnomon - time to move on Posted Oct 21, 2003
No, it was the thesauruses that became extinct. The theodolites survived in a little island in south-east Asia and are being actively re-introduced into the wild.

Ahh, I'm afraid you're not completely right there Gnomon, whilst there is a breeding plan underway and plans afoot to re-introduce the lesser-spotted Thesaurus and its less well-known cousin the Antarctic Thesaurus into the wild, these particular thesauri (note the spelling please) were not the rarest sup-species... That particular honour goes to the Greater Thesaurus, which has yet to be successfully mated in captivity

Yikes, looks like I got my theodolites mixed up with my thesauri somewhere in there
Painful!!!

Jim Pooley Posted Oct 21, 2003
I thought the Theodolites were a religious group who thought it was ok to marry 1 3 5 or 7 wives.... so the Thesauri ate them.
Thank you guys for a feasible sounding answer as the saying goes...
Amidst the nonsense....
