Bubbley drinks

Where did the concept of putting bubbles in "refreshing drinks" come from and why do the bubbles seem to alter the taste (or is it simply the sensation?). I'm sure there is a perfectly valid scientific explanation... isn't there??

Personally, I don't find fizzy drinks refreshing and I know I'm not alone in this. Unfortunately, there are comparatively few non-fizzy, low calorie drinks on the market. In particular, I can only think of one place where I can get non-fizzy flavoured 'spring water', which is my cold drink of choice.

I don't know where they come from. I DO know however that bubbly milk tastes like, well... You figure it out. Really, if someone offers a taste just get the heck out of there...

I like fizzy drinks. Sparkling wine such asti spumante is very nice. I dont know why, but the bubbles makes the alcohol seem to be stronger.
