In times gone by any cover version made had a reasonable chance of approaching the greatness of the original. In the modern era the goal of anyone making a cover version seems to be to make the new version as bland as possible.

I wasn't a big fan of Rolf Harris's "Stairway to Heaven".
Now, if Robert Plant had done "Court of King Caractacus"...

Sweet Child O Mine was ill-advisedly covered by Sheryl Crow. Another hideous cover was Shawn Colvin doing Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic.
However, for true massacre of a song, look no further than Madonna's hideous effort of American Pie.
It's not to say that all covers are bad: look what the Flying Pickets did to Only You, or what Mike Flowers did to Wonderwall.

Think of a speeded up version of American Pie with lots of beeps.

Covering a song has become so commonplace now - I often find myself introducing my kids to the originals of songs that they only know from the recent cover (Eternal Flame, Tainted love, The Tide is High, Sweet Dreams etc)
Some are truly awful - dance mixes in particular make me seethe with anger.
Some add a nuance that wasn't there in the original - Metallica's version of "Nothing Else Matters" is rather sweet and lovely, and I'm currently trying to lay my hands on Juliet Turner's seductive version of Toxic.
One of my most recent downloads was of José Gonzalez (of the bouncing balls in San Francisco ad) doing Kylie's Hand on your Heart. And I adore Snow Patrol's version of Crazy in Love.
You can't say all covers are bad! An existing bank of songs provides a resource that musicians will use for a number of aims - making a quick buck, exploring another facet of a song, reaching out to a new audience - all of these are viable intentions in the biz.
