Guidelines for educating a child about the internet?

Post 1

Dorothy (used to be Baby Driver)

OK, so I'm a bit ahead of myself - my daughter is only a baby at the moment! But as both her parents have an internet-ready computer, and we sit on the net most of the time, she's going to get the idea that the net is safe and comfortable before she's very old.

I'm just trying to work out how to teach her to be safe online while she's still a kid. Obviously there's net-nanny and stuff, but has anyone any ideas of what to say?

Cars are dangerous, and everyone has one, but kids don't really fit to drive them! TVs don't have the surf-capability, and there aren't the dodgy channels available; but computers are kid-friendly, educational, and without safety boundaries!

Hope you can help - there's time though - the mini-munchkin is only eight weeks old!

x x Dorothy

Gnomon - time to move on

As far as I can tell, the favourite action of teenage girls on the internet is to look for pictures of their favourite pop-stars and actors. Orlando Bloom is an example: his name is typed into Google more often than the word "sex".

With teenage boys, on the other hand, the number 1 favourite pastime on the internet is looking for sex.

Since your little tot is female, I wouldn't worry too much.

Telewest are apparently doing something to help educate parents about their darlings actions on the web. There's a link to it from the article I've just read, don't know if it's relevant but you might find something of use.
