Personally, (generally), I unsubscribe from a topic as soon as it seems clear that it's become inactive.

I unsubscribe anytime a conversation becomes unutterably dull and disinteresting. Or if it turns ugly and I don't want to be a part of it.
In fact, I'll probably be unsubscribing from this one before the end of the day.

I automatically subscribe to Askh2g2 threads, but then unsub if the subject line suggests something that I don't want to get involved in. But if I'm interested than I don't unsub at all.
Which probably means this thread is going to remain on my list for forever and a day.

The first thing I do after I have logged on and checked the threads on my Personal Space is unsubscribe from any threads with titles that look like they don't appeal to me. This is usually 3 or 4 before I post to a thread where I think I have something to say.

I unsubscribe from all the conversations that revert/convert to being Nighthoover threads.
Guess what I'm doing next?
Incog.
