I know he's not the best replacement, but Ian Duncan Smith (bleh) at least would be completely ineffectual enough to not put us in a war...lets face it, he could hardly do any worse than Tony *lets revolutionise the education system* Blair...
Ideally, I'd stick Charles Kennedy in there, but I doubt anyone else would agree with that either.

I think its a pity that so many people don't vote Liberal because they don't think they will win.

My Mum always has (because she never knew what to do with her vote and let me choose) and thats where my first ever vote will go. It *is* a pity. There's no reason why they could be a good government...
This is *so* offtopic!

I think that there is an n't missing from that statement.

I'd like to see the Liberals in power again. (Not that I'm not old enough to remember when they were!)
The trouble is the current voting system, so with three main contenders, the winner may actually have less than half the votes.

...perhaps if they changed their name back to The Whigs, they would have a better chance...

I would definitely get hold of their promo stuff if they did!!
I don't think we are allowed to ask who people are going to vote for in the next election are we?

Why not? As long as it's not overt campaigning it's OK I think.
I'm probably going to vote Green next time round. I voted Socialist Alliance at the last one, but I think that they might be a front for SWP which is not a good thing.
If I was going to vote for a major party it would be the lib dems I suppose. I couldn't bring myself to vote Labour.

You can ask people who they're going to vote for, but they don't have to tell you, nor do they have to be truthful!

Oh. Ok. Well, I'm off to start an askh2g2 thread about this then. I wasn't sure whether I would be allowed to...
Then this thread can be steered back on topic, for it is an interesting one!!

Blues Shark, you are so right about Solzhenitsyn! I thought it was just me... but he *is* boring! What a relief to be able to say so. On this topic, I have heard that Charles Williams, Agatha Christie and G K Chesterton were anti-semitic (shows my middle class low brow taste) but from what I have read, that's not (necessarily) so at all! Does anyone have any evidence about these authors?
(Re Agatha Christie, like so many Americans (and she was one) she had real strange and intense class attitudes - her maids/police constables/gardeners etc are morons. The Herclue Poirot TV series with David Suchet is therefore quite subversive in a delightful way!)

Solzhenitsyn! I knew there had been something I had meant to say...
Er... I hate to be the voice of desent, but aside from the moral necessity and all, I actually do enjoy reading his stuff... er.
