depends how fine you want to split hairs. I tend to see music as either Rocky, Dancey, Rootsy or Classical. I can't be bothered with all that sub-genre crap.

Besides which, I've seen Nails live and I reckon they're definately a rock band, they just rock harder than most.

Ok. You're completely wrong, but entitled to your opinion. They are industrial rock - as in they use guitars combined with synthy/keyboard/computerised/sampled sound...a rock band is more traditional - guitars, bass, drums. You can't compare NIN with u2 because they don't produce the same style of sound. Simple as that. Not to mention the different influences and issues raised in the music...

'scuse me, but don't NIN go on stage with a drummer, two guitarists(who occaisionally swap to keys or bass) a keyboardist and a singer. They perform like a rock band, they're not like Orbital who hide behind a load of gear and trigger loops, they perform. They are rock'n'roll, sex, drugs, the lot.

and I'll go you one further, what about Rage Against The Machine? Drums, bass, guitar and vocals. They even boasted about not using synths/samplers etc, yet their sound (and influences, if you really want to drag that into this) is totally diffenent to U2's. They're still both rock bands, though.

I'm not going to get into an elitist argument about this. Well known fact that NIN ae a little more developed than a rock band - their sound encompasses both the idea of Skinny Puppy and 80's electro pop, as well as good old rock basics.

RATM have never been just a rock band either...they were always somewhere around hip hop/funk and metal...

And onstage is an entirely different world...

It's times like this where all that sub-genre stuff gets in the way. If music is rockin', then I say it's rock music. and, in my opinion, Nails do it best. ...but that's just my opinion.

And then again there's Massive Attack, usually classified as Dance in most record shops, lots of synths, taped stuff, samples etc but who can kick U2's ass any day.

...and please don't shout. As I've already said, I don't buy into that sub-genre jazz. Punk, metal, grunge, nu-metal, sports-medal, thrash, industrial, goth, hard rock, alt rock, rockabilly, psychobilly, new wave, rock'n'rock, death metal, and so on and so forth. They're all still rock music!

broaden your perspective and you won't be so confused.

I'm afraid I can't agree. OK, the vast amount of manufactured music is rubbish, but every now and then, as is the case with all other genres (minority or otherwise), they occasionally produce an absolute gem, that has crossover appeal to lots of other people. That is the spark that keeps musical progression going.

They may not be around anymore however because their music is still around they must be taken into consideration along with every other rock band that has ever recorded.
