Do CDs warp in heat the way vinyl does?
a girl called Ben Started conversation Dec 20, 2002
I mean lots of heat. I have had a unit built which runs the length of one wall, there are bookshelves and CD shelves, but there are also a couple of covered radiators between the shelf units. (Does this make sense?)
Anyway, the radiators give out LOTS and LOTS of heat, and I am worried about damaging the CDs.
I may move them anyway, adjust the height of the shelves, and use the extra shelving for paperbacks. You can never have enough bookshelves in my experience.
But I would like to know if CDs can be damaged by heat in order to know how urgently I need to deal with this.

I certainly wouldn't keep CDs close to a radiator, but I can't say for definite that they will be damaged.

The quick answer is yes I'm afraid, they're not as bad as vinyl but they will be damaged in excessive heat such as that given off by a radiator.

Okie dokie.
They had their own dandy little shelves before I had the woodwork done, and I can heft them down out of the attic. This all means that I end up with more book shelving, which makes me very happy. Clouds and silver linings and all that.
Thanks for the advice peoples.

Here in south central Texas, the temperature inside a parked car in full sun during the summer can reach well over 200ºF. Mrs Gosho always leaves her cd's in the car but they never seem to warp. In fact, she left a double cd on the parcel shelf (the others are out of direct sunlight). The case distorted itself into all kinds of interesting shapes but the cd was fine

Hmm, I still wouldn't risk it, it can't be good for them long term. Too much heat will degrade anything over time.

I will move them, it frees up a huge amount of book-shelf space when I have adjusted the height of the shelves, and you can never have too much book-shelf space.
Aendr - that link had me laughing out loud!

200ºF? Put a jug of water and a small hand-crank generator with a steam catching wheel in it, and you can have your very own power plant. No wonder Enron is based in Texas.
