50 Places to see before you die
Ballynac Started conversation Nov 21, 2002
On Craig Doyle's 50 PLaces to See Before you die, Europe was rather poorly represented. This is undoubtedly because it was voted for by British people and when we living here in Britain think of where to go before you die we think of far flung places. So I want another list. I want 50 places in Europe to see before you die. Be specific - don't just say France for example! FYI, the European places that did make the list were Rome, Paris, Barcelona & Iceland. I'm off home now so I want lots of good suggestions when I come back tomorrow.
I would have to start with some of these
The North coast of Ireland
Mont St Michel
The Scottish Highlands
The old town of Mdina in Malta
The Art Nouveau district in Riga

Stone Henge
The Orkneys
The Shetlands
Florence
Prague
The White Cliffs of Dover (and some bluebirds if you can manage it ta)
Ballydehob (this is very personal, that's where my Nan was from)
Lands End
John O Groats
Sherwood forest and it's ancient trees
The black Forest (a gateux wouldn't go amiss either)
Anywhere you've never lived within spitting distance of, but have heard of in story song or fillum.
Now, if someone would just give me the cash...

Stanage edge, Peak District (but not on a weekend and only when its sunny...)
The High Pyrenees, French side. (but don't bother with the Cirque de Gavarnie - too many tourists and too much mule dung.)
The middle of the North Moor of Dartmoor when it's misty.
The second hand bookshops in St Michel, Paris.
Budapest or Krakow

Does China apply? The Great Wall. Tibet, the Hymalayas, Southern France, Venice, Florence, Prague, Dresden, St. Petersberg, again,. The Louvre, The orkney Islands, The Outer Hebrides (I've seen the inner ones) The Coxwolds, Stone Henge again on summer solstice eve. Amsterdam, Copenhagen. That's my European list but as for the rest of the world. I desperately want top returnto the place of my birth Kilembe Uganda. I left when I was 4 yrs. old. I am determined to climb Aires Rock in Australia stay on a sheep ranch in the outback, visit Fiji, travel to the Yukon and perhaps settle there. See Polar Bears in Churchill Manitoba, Go to the Arctic in Summer Spend time in Northwestern Ireland in the winter, Study at Trinity in Dublin, Visit Newfoundland and Labrador in Canada. The list is far too long but then again, I'm only 49 so I still have many travelling years ahead of me. Kathleen

Isle of Skye at sunrise'/sunset;. I've done that. One of my best getawaya yet, I flew from Toronto to Glasgow and started driving. Ended up in a village on Skye called Stein, went fishing, dipped sheep, drank lots of single malt Scotch, read a book and lost myself in the landscape. Highly reccommended! K

Lincolnshire. Its a bit flat, it rains occasionally and its quiet. I know, not inspiring, but at least it got a mention.

Is central Europe all flat and boring with some nice cities? In my mind I don't associate central Europe with beautiful landscapes but I've never actually been there. Anyone want to set me straight. I'm also going to add Sacre Couer / Montmartre in Paris and in the West of Ireland, the Burren and Clew Bay.

Central Europe is definitely not all flat and boring.
I can vouch for the Tatra mountains on the Slovakian/Polish border - certainly worth a visit.
the Julian Alps in Slovenia are supposed to be superb.
Plus there are some amazing natural habitats on the east of Poland and in the Carpathians (esp Romania)- the last places in Europe where you can find bear, lynx, bison in any quantity.

Egypt:
The pyramids and the sphinx at Gizeh
The Abu Simbel Temple
Watching the sunset from Mount Sinai (and the sunset is better than the sunrise, believe me!)

I'm an untraveled American-type, so please excuse the list if it seems a bit dull and typical...
~London (will be next summer)
~Ireland. Anywhere. (I'm not picky)
~Scotland. (see above; also going next summer)
~Paris
~le cote d'azur
~Vienna (to see the ies)
~Great Barrier Reef
~Great Wall
~Greece - Athens
~just about anywhere in Australia
~New Zealand
~Grand Canyon
~Chicago
~Alaska
~Quebec
~somewhere in Mexico - the Mayan ruins'd be cool.
~the Maine coast
~New Orleans
~anywhere in Wyoming
~Egypt - the whole pyramids and sphinx dealie.
~Florence
~Rome
~somewhere down in the Carribean
Too lazy to count all that up... they're all pretty general anyway... so it's probably at least 50 total.
