My finest hour as a record salesperson was selling the Screaming Blue Messiahs to someone who came in looking for Fred Astaire. Bet that shook things up in the old folks home...smiley - laughsmiley - laughsmiley - laugh

Thanks, Shark-- I like Less Than Jake's sound, but it's odd that people call it 'ska' if it has nothing to do with ska at all. smiley - huh

Well, I have a theory about music-if you enjoy it, it actually doesn't matter a damn what you call it, be it The Upsetters, The Dhol Foundation, Kraftwerk or John Lee Hooker.
Turn it up in there-I CAN'T HEAR IT!smiley - laugh

Out of interest, there are Guide entries on both 'Reggae' (A337132) and 'Ska' (A315938) smiley - smiley Of course, if any knowledgable person wants to write something more detailed on the difference between the two, the Musicians' Guild would love to plug it smiley - winkeye

Ska came from the Beatles song, "ob-la-di ob-la-da", the worst song ever to spawn an entire musical genre. The Beatles have written many single songs that have then been appropriated by other musicians, "I want you (she's so heavy)" for example, which was repeatedly plagiarized for thiry years by Pink Floyd.

Then I can only assume that when the Skatalites formed in Summer '64 they had the help of the Timelords to see forward into Summer '68 when the Beatles recorded that particular song...

Yes, that's also how Pink Floyd travelled back in time to assassinate Abraham Lincoln.

You've lost me there Theanthrope.
Assuming the post about Floyd and honest Abe is a joke, on what are you basing you're comments about Ska and the Beatles?
(I'll let someone else pick up the one about Floyd, although I would have to say that they are one of the very few British bands who owe little or nothing to the Beatles.)

A few more - Soft Machine, Cabaret Voltaire, Throbbing Gristle, The Specials (since this is a ska/reggae thread after all), Ian Dury and the Blockheads, 808 State...

My comment on ska and the beatles was based on a remark from a ska musician, confirmed afterwards by my own listening comparison. After reading your chronolgy, I would say then that the beatles didn't invent ska in the same way that they didn't invent rock and roll.

To the original question of this thread, I'd like to answer that the main difference between ska and reggae is that ska has lots more horns.

My brother is a dj on the free party circuit and plays mainly ska, reggae, dub and dancehall. I did have to laugh when he dragged me in to his room to listen to a song he had been trying to get hold of for ages. As soon as I walked in I recognised it... it was the Specials and 'Rudi'. He was intrigued as to how I knew what it was. So I pointed out i was alive when it was originally released! smiley - laugh

Theanthrope, to be honest, you're just wrong-you've already admitted that 'Ob la di...' is a bl**dy awful song, so I fail to see how the Beatles ham-fisted attempted at the sound of Jamaica was an influence on a music scene which already had the Skatalites, The Pioneers, The Upsetters and many other brilliant bands and superb songs by the time it was written. Were The Specials et al copying the Beatles or the original sound? I wonder... The Beatles were *not* responsible for ska. (And I wish the idea that they had 'refined rock and roll' would die as well. The only people who really believe that are Oasis.smiley - groan)
Gosh...you are of course correct. Though I could just as easily stae the following question-'Discuss the influence of Krautrock, and particularly Kraftwerk, on the bands mentioned'.smiley - laugh

I finfd it interesting that Dury is currently turning up on a lot of Punk *and* Ska compilations on this side of the pond.
I'd never considered him either...smiley - erm
I think 808 State and the whole dance scene owe more than a little to The Man Machine, btw.

smiley - ok Cool bananas! Takes me back to my yoof!

20something years ago I thought I was the coolest kid on the block 'cos I'd seen Madness at the Hammersmith Palais and none of my mates had!

I cannot hear this music without squaring off my shoulders, clenching my fists and stepping jerkily backwards and forwards whilst singing(?) "nncha nncha" or "iddler iddler"

Yes, the blurring of ska and punk can produce cheesy music which is often appallingly bad. I went to see a band called the Mad Caddies (Californian band signed to Fat Wreck Chords, LTJ's label) a few weeks ago, and let's just say that it wasn't the most exciting gig that i've been to. The whole venue had been overwhelmed with so called 'teenage skate punks', who insisted on stage-diving, crudely moshing and just generally being annoying. Some b*****d decided that it would be cool to start throwing Newcastle Brown Ale around. Idiot. While I suppose the music was sort of ok, their annoying fans thoroughly spoilt the gig for mesmiley - sadface
