How do you celebrate Easter?

Post 41

Jim Lynn

Easter moves because the original event took place over Passover, which, because of the way the Jewish calendar works (as I understand it), moves around in our calendar. Since so much of what's important about the story of the crucifixion is because the events happened during Passover, it's celebrated at the same time, rather than fixing it at a particular date in the (relatively recent) Gregorian calendar.

The Jewish calendar is a mixture of a Solar and Lunar calendar, with months that don't always have the same number of days, but in total add up to the standard 365 days. This is unlike the Moslem calendar which is strictly lunar, so that Moslem festivals like Ramadan actually move around in the Gregorian calendar (the Moslem year is eleven days shorter than the Gregorian calendar). This is also why the crescent is such an important symbol to Moslems - because the appearance of the crescent moon signals the beginning of Ramadan.

Sorry, drifted slightly off topic there. smiley - smiley

The Easter Bunny

What difference does wrapping the eggs in onion skins make? Does it strengthen the shell in any way, or does it just colour them?

Minerva (Keeper of the Evil Toast Elf and the Sock Fairy)

It just colours them. You could hard boil the egss then paint them (use food colouring if you intend to eat the eggs afterwards).

The Easter Bunny

How else might you decorate the eggs? And what kind of look would you go for?

Has anyone tried a Faberge egg look?
