I will not attempt to provide people for all of these, just for one: Composer of the (20th) Century has to Igor Stravinksy. Without a doubt the single most influential composer in the century, producing such memorable works as the Firebird and The Rite of Spring.

Excuse my cultural ignorance, but might I ask what the difference is between director and film maker? Are you considering the filmmaker to be a totality--the individual (or individuals) who can be the screenwriter, producer, editor, and director--and possibly star--all in one?

I was thinking of film makers as opposed to stage directors.
I forgot to put groups or ensembles in the musical bit.

This is hard. I'm trying to come up with answers that are not just my personal faves, but have had a lasting significance on the culture of the Twentieth Century.
Mmmm...the musical group is definitely the Beatles. Their effect on pop music is incredible. After thirty years, they still are at the forefront of modern music.

For actor, what about perhaps Michael Caine? And I'd say Dali for painter. Just cos he is also famous and I like him better than Picasso.
