The Bee's Knees

At work we were just wondering what was so great about the bee's knees. Can anyone enlighten us with the answer?

And while we're talking about such things what exactly is so desirable about the dog's b*ll*cks?

According to an episode of QI that was on a few weeks back, "Bog Standard" and {how to put this politely} "Mutts Nuts" are supposedly rhyming slang versions of the Meccano set sizes Box Standard and Box Deluxe.

Gnomon - time to move on

As far as I can remember, some American guy came up with the phrases "bee's knees" and "cat's pyjamas" to mean something great. Neither phrase meant anything in particular, and it is surely coincidence that bee's knees sounds like "business" spoken while wearing a sombrero.

According to Stephen Fry on his comedy quiz QI, both "the dog's unmentionables" and the phrase "bog standard" come from Meccano sets of the early twentieth century, which were sold as either the "Box, Standard" or "Box, Deluxe".
