It seems to me that the difficulties of incompatability will probibly take a long time to sort out - much longer than with VHS / Betamax / V2000 as that battle was over rental compatability - in 1982 you couldn't rent half as many films on beta, so people bought VHS. It doesn't matter what your machine is now, it will still play prerecorded matirial. So we're going to be waiting for people to replace recorders before the formts even out.

Or until a fourth, multi-purpose system comes in.

I suspect what will happen is that manufacturers will make players which can play any of the formats, so after a while it won't matter whether it's DVD-R, DVD+R, or DVD+R-W*pi^(sqrt-1)...
