I think it's perfectly appropriate - I mean, kids are cute (sometimes) but they aren't objects of desire. The application of the word to an inanimate object is, as you said, evolution.

smiley - smileyProportion is the key. If it looks gross, like many American surgically enhanced examples, it acts as a turn off.

As more of a leg person I would prefer small is cute.
