I think it's perfectly appropriate - I mean, kids are cute (sometimes) but they aren't objects of desire. The application of the word to an inanimate object is, as you said, evolution.

Proportion is the key. If it looks gross, like many American surgically enhanced examples, it acts as a turn off.
As more of a leg person I would prefer small is cute.
