A Conversation for Talking Point: Children's Television

Bill and Ben

Post 1

I am Donald Sutherland

Must one of the most enduring memories of my childhood. I can remember rushing home from school to watch Bill and Ben on my Aunties TV. We didn't have a TV in out till 1960. What a deprived childhood I must have had. smiley - biggrin

Then there was Muffin the Mule. I got a Muffin the Mule puppet for Christmas one year. I though I had the original and and if anyone wanted to see Muffin the Mule again they had to come to my house. Imagine the disappointment when he appeared on TV again after Christmas.

As a grew older Tales of the Riverbank with the late great Johnny Morris narrating was required viewing. Also as the Hot Chestnut Man with Eamon Andrews in Crackerjack!! They don't make them like that anymore.

I have the same memory of getting home from school to watch Bill and Ben the Flowerpot Men, not forgetting Little Weed, of course! It was the highlight of my days.

I also remember seeing something called Larry the Lamb or perhaps he was one of the characters on another series, memory gets a bit hazy sometimes. smiley - doh

Who could forget Little Weed. Bill and Benn would have been in serious bother many times if it were not got her timely warnings on the return of the gardener from his lunch. I keep reading stories of the revival of Bill and Benn but have yet to to it.

Larry the Lamb came a bit later I believe - 1970s. I can vaguely remember it but cannot recall actually ever seeing it.
