I have just inherited (froma dusty store cupboard)two poorly Macintosh LC475's that switch on and the fan goes etc, they make the start up chord, but the monitor steadfastly remains blank / grey...since both machines exhibit identical symptoms, I don't think it is a coincidentally identical video card fault...

I've tried starting up with the spacebar pressed and pressing c to change boot disk etc but to no avail. I assume they are running system 7.1, and somebody did say something about them having a password protected login to At Ease...

I love Macs dearly and can't stand to see these two consigned to the bin...
Any clooz?

Is mise Duncan

Is there any static attraction (i.er. small bits of paper stick to the tube)?
It is quite possible that the tubes have blown.

Have you tried holding down the shift key at startup?

Hold it for as long as you can. (It should allow you to bypass AtEase, but you'll start up without any extensions.) If you can't get a "happy Mac" face, then you've got a monitor/card/port problem. if you see a happy Mac, then you can toss the AtEase Extension into the Trash and restart.

You could also try zapping the PRAM.

Were you able to get any System disks with those LC's?

Sadly not...lost in the mists of time I'm afraid. Will try the 'pressing Shift' trick - hard to beleive that both monitors or both machines video card etc are faulty simultaneously since they've just been sitting in a cupboard gathering dust for the past year or so...

..actually, maybe the dust is the problem. A community of dust lice has obviously evolved in the CRT somewhere!

Nahhhhhhhh... just try the shift key. smiley - winkeye You'll need at least System 7.5 for these babies once they're up and running. I'm not sure if they will run 7.6 or 8.0.

Hi FortyTwo! Hi Kay! Fancy meeting you here! smiley - winkeye

Forty Two, I have a ton of Mac resources and a lot of URLs that sadly, I can't post here. If you'd like to send me an email at the address on my homepage, I'll send you some of the websites (I'm leaving home very soon, and won't get to my email again until tonight, but I'll send it out to you then).

I also belong to a bunch of email lists, and I know of at least one "classic" Mac list that is really great, with some good people to give advice. It's the lowendmac list. That's a hint for you! smiley - winkeye

Hey, Shea.... I am *The* MacWench, or didn't you know? (Oh yeah, those were the pre-Beeb days that I can no longer find.)smiley - winkeye

Yes, lowendmac is the resource to go to, yep!

Yes, yes... "MacWench" smiley - smiley

I'm forming a h2g2 Wenches' Guild. I just thought about it as I was taking a shower. All ballsy, busty, uppity women of h2g2 are invited to join. You just need to be some specific sort of wench... ...got to work on this one...hmmmm.... heh-heh-heh....

Tried the shift key...no joy. Not a flicker - guess it must be the monitors...gotta fly now, catch ou all in a short while...

Although not a Wench, Technically, can I join the Wenches Guild as an honorary PseudoWench?

Drag queens and transgendered especially welcome! If you can put on the costume, shake your booty and consider yourself an uppity woman, you're in. If you are going to promote women's history and women's everything (very feminist, y'know), then you too can be a Wench.

However, all *wenchers* shall be tarred and feathered.

Not so keen on the tarring and feathering side of things, but I'm reliably informed that I can do 'uppity' when prompted.

Zapping the PRAM didn't work either...more and more convinced the monitors have blown. Does anybody know if there is an adaptor available to connect these LC's to a standard SVGA style monitor? (the connector is ADC I think(??too early??) and doesn't look like the normal RGB / VGA /SVGA style plugs.)

My usual machine is an iMac, so the whole monitor thing is all new to me.

Thanx for the tip St Shea, will email later for list of URL's.
